How to pay in China

Almost everyone in China pays by scanning a QR code with their phone. Since 2024 visitors can do the same with their own Visa or Mastercard. Set it up before you fly.

The short version

  • Install Alipay and link your Visa, Mastercard or other international card. It works almost everywhere, from taxis to noodle stalls.
  • Optionally add WeChat Pay as a backup.
  • Carry a small amount of cash, around 500–1,000 yuan, for the occasional place that only takes cash.
  • On our tours, hotels, guides, transport, entrance fees and listed meals are prepaid, so you only pay for extras.

Setting up Alipay

  1. Download Alipay from the App Store or Google Play. Choose the international version if asked.
  2. Sign up with your mobile number. You'll receive a text code, so do this at home while your SIM works normally.
  3. Go to "Bank cards" and add your Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners or Discover card.
  4. Verify your identity with your passport when prompted. It takes a few minutes.
  5. To pay, open the app and either scan the shop's QR code or show yours for them to scan.
About feesSmall payments are usually free for foreign cards. A small service fee may apply to larger payments. The app shows any fee before you confirm.

WeChat Pay

WeChat is China's main messaging app, and WeChat Pay works the same way: add your card under "Me → Services → Wallet". It's handy as a second option and for keeping in touch with your guide.

Cards and cash

  • Cards: international hotels, large department stores and airports often accept Visa and Mastercard directly. Small shops and restaurants usually don't.
  • Cash: ATMs at Bank of China and other major banks accept foreign cards. Every business is required to accept cash, but some will struggle to give change.
  • Exchange: you'll get better rates from an ATM in China than at home.

Tips to avoid problems

  • Tell your bank you'll be in China, so payments aren't flagged as suspicious.
  • Bring two cards from different networks, such as one Visa and one Mastercard.
  • If a payment fails, try the other app or card. Your guide can always help.
